So, you were deciding yesterday what to eat and you ended up making yourslef a sandwich. Today, you couldn’t decide from red and white color tshirt you want to put on and you ended up wearing blue. We all face these kinds of problem where a small decision which may not affect anything at all, ended up consuming insane amount of time. Thanks to Dave, Calvin, and Spyn, all these decisions will not take insane amount of time anymore.
I was browsing through my Facebook feeds and saw that one of my friend had shared this campaign. I liked the idea so much immediately opened the link and took me to the Kickstarter campaign. After going through the pitching video, I thought of interviewing them, and here we have Dave from Onehunder (the parent company).
1. The name Spyn sounds interesting. How did you land with such a cool name?
Dave – We’re Onehundred, SPYN is our project name on Kickstarter. This is our 12th crowd funding project, all of them have had mis-spelled 4 letter names (Ledr, Pucs, Brdi, Kiki, Bagl). It’s a theme that got started with on our first project back in 2012, we just kept going with it! It’s in honor of my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Marble, who gave me a difficult time for my poor spelling!
Onehundred is named for the 100 mile radius where we manufacture what we create. If we can’t make it here, we don’t make it – it’s an interesting and rewarding constraint!
2. Tell us more about Spyn.
Dave – Spyn started out as a fun ‘relief’ product concept for everyone who had just gone through a stressful decision making period – here in the US (elections) and the UK (Brexit). We wanted to make people smile again!
3. Who are the people behind Spyn?
Dave – Onehundred was founded by my son Calvin and I, Dave.
4. Tell us more about your Kickstarter campaign.
Dave – We were invited by Kickstarter to participate in their ‘Make 100’ event for the month of January – quite an honor! As part of the event, we offered 100 limited edition sets of modern dice – they all got snapped up pretty quick.
We have a range of decision-making choices our backers can choose between, but half of backers are choosing all four. Spyn hit its goal in less then an hour. Our backer community is great – we wouldn’t be here without them!
5. What does a day at Onehundred look like?
Dave – Onehundred has 4 – 5 future Kickstarter projects in development at any one time. One of the things I like most about being an entrepreneur is doing a little bit of everything to move our business forward. There really isn’t a typical day for us – we’re either packing & shipping boxes, working with a new factory, producing a video, answering backers questions, building & testing prototypes. We have to do everything a corporation does, but on a much smaller scale, leaner budgets and a team of only 1.5 people (Calvin is in college most of the time)
6. Tell us about the entrepreneurial journey you guys undertook.
Dave – Wow, answering that could be an entire book! The short version: we built Onehundred around crowd funding and local manufacturing – it’s the first 100% crowd-launched brand.
After my experience launching a previous company, struggling to find financing for it, building up a brand reputation, achieving sustainable revenue – this second venture was a DREAM. We were cash-positive and debt-free by noon on the first day of business, we owned the company 100% and we were in complete control of what we would make next – all thanks to crowd funding.
We’ve since run 12 projects that collectively have raised $600K. All of them were successful and shipped on time, and we’ve gone on to be an advisor on 12 others. All together, we’ve raised or helped to raise $1.7M in crowd funding.
7. You guys did an amazing job with the campaign. We’d love to hear more about how you went about it, what were the opportunities, the challenges, the roadblocks etc.
Dave – Spyn is our 12th campaign – through a lot of trial and error, studying other campaigns and talking with our backers about why they back projects, we have created a system that works well for us. Take good care of them and they will take good care of you!
8. What would be your guru mantra that you’d like to give to budding entrepreneurs for funding?
Dave – It’s good to prepare yourself in advance: It’s harder then it looks, takes longer then you imagine, and delivers less then you expect.
9. And finally, if given a chance to reach out to all the entrepreneurs, what would you like to say to them?
Dave – We’re big fans of crowd funding in general and Kickstarter in particular – it has made starting a business easier then ever.
That’s all guys. Make sure that you get the offer below that is for the Entrepreneurs. Means for you.
